We know the weather is a little iffy, but we plan to be there tonight with performances at 5, 515, and 530pm

Performances begin Tonight!

 We are excited to have you join us in the Everglades for performances connecting the human and more-than-human, exploring the relationships between nature and dancer.

Every Friday in January, performances will be held at 5, 515, and 530pm ET approximately. The location will be slightly different each week, along the levees at Loxahatchee Rd. in Parkland. Use the address 15490 Loxahatchee Rd., Parkland, for your GPS. See the map in the post dated 1/5/2023 for each week's location info. 

Please register for one or all of the events here, and make a donation to goes to Love the Everglades and the dancers.

The address is technically for the boat tours. As you enter from Lox that will be on your left. 

Jan 6 & 13- South along the levees (come out of the parking lot and make a right) to the boat ramp. We will be at the southernmost edge of that parking area. 

Jan 20- Walk west in the parking lot. Right before you get to a yellow gate, we will be on your left. 

Jan 27- North along the levees (come out of the parking lot and make a left) to cement wall.

Important updates for KINesphere re: COVID-19.

Because the emphasis in this performance is on connection, community, and kinship, 

masks are expected.

We have also reduced the number of tickets available for each performance to only 10,

to ensure social distancing. Please make sure to reserve your tickets to ensure your spot!

Speaking of, what will we do if it rains? Well, we have secured the Mangrove Hall at the Anne Kolb Nature Center, so this show will be happening, in all 3 time slots, rain or shine! So plan to join us!

 Our performance will take place along the Lake Observation Trail at the Anne Kolb Nature Center. Since this trail is entirely a boardwalk, it is accessible for wheelchairs, strollers, and other accessibility helps.

South Florida in the Winter

 Is truly beautiful. I remember when I moved here, almost 10 years ago. I was baking Christmas cookies with my windows open. 

Over the past decade, though, climate change has definitely made changes. This Wednesday, I went back to Anne Kolb Nature Center to turn in some paperwork, and to play with movement in our beautiful show location. It was in the 80s! A little too warm for December! After just 30 minutes of dancing, I was sweaty. It was a reminder of we really live in relationship with nature- our choices affect our environment. 

If you are coming to our performance, make you sure you check the weather. December in South Florida can get chilly. Or, it may be like this week, hot and steamy. Regardless of temperature, bring sunscreen and bug spray! Get your tickets now on Eventbrite!

 We are ready to announce 3 performances of KINesphere!

When: Thursday, December 30 at 12pm, 2pm and 4pm

Where: The Lake Observation Trail of the Anne Kolb Nature Center (this trail is ADA accessible).

How to get tickets: The Nature Center is free and open to the public! So is our show! However, we are asking people RSVP via Eventbrite, so we know that you can get a good view. Additionally, if you choose a Donation Ticket on Eventbrite, the proceeds will be split between the dancers and the Love the Everglades Movement. We are really excited to be supporting this Indigenous-led work to preserve the health of our South Florida ecosystem. 

Funding for the project is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommend by the Broward Cultural Division.

 We are beyond excited to be using the beautiful, and accessible (free and ADA compliant) Anne Kolb Nature Center Lake Observation Trail for our performance. Show info is coming Tuesday!

Update!

 A rainy weekend means that not much work has happened in movement. It does give me pause to think about creating an outdoor performance! Will it rain? Will rain keep people away? Will the dancers be comfortable? What happens to work on the ground if it rains? Many things to consider!

We hope to announce our date and location by November 1, so stay tuned!

Welcome to KINesphere!

 This blog will document the creative process of the development of KINesphere, a dance/dance-theatre piece exploring the connections between humans and the world around them. 

Summary of the Project

The concept for this project is the development of a dance piece like a moveable feast.

This performance would include professional dancers in outdoor settings,

with the audiences moving between locations.

In each new place, audiences would be confronted by the dancer’s relationship to nature-

as a backdrop, as a partner, as an obstacle or an inspiration, etc. 

The purpose of this piece is to encourage audiences to reflect on

how they encounter their natural world.

Is it something to be subdued? Tolerated? Enjoyed? Protected?

The title of KINesphere emphasizes our “personal space” or “bubble”,

something we are all very aware of with COVID-19 social distancing measures,

as well as the idea of relating as kin, rather than simply “other”.

This idea of kinship comes from my readings of Robin Wall-Kimmerer & Donna J. Haraway.

Both of these scientists/writers/teachers/activists encourage us to encounter

the natural world as kinfolk, rather than species removed from ourselves.

After all, we do all share the same kinesphere of the Earth. 

This idea also came from personal explorations in the arboretum at the University of Miami

while teaching there in the Spring Semester of 2021.

I found the outdoor setting to inspire new movement choices for me,

as well as new ways of seeing the plants, lizards, rocks I encountered every day.
